A capacity audience attended Roscommon Older People’s Council’s Culture Night celebration in Roscommon Arts Centre on 18th September 2026. The event, was fully booked weeks in advance, which highlights the strong interest in and support for traditional music and song throughout the county.

The evening was expertly compered by Sally Anne Barrett, who guided the audience through a varied and entertaining programme.

Guests were welcomed by Cllr. Laurence Fallon, Leas Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, who praised the work of Roscommon’s Older People’s Council and acknowledged the importance of Culture Night in bringing communities together through shared cultural experiences.

A stellar line-up of performers showcased a wealth of musical talent. The audience was treated to an outstanding performance by the Roscommon Traditional Music Orchestra, whose young musicians delighted attendees with a lively selection of traditional tunes. The renowned Cór Comáin Choir captivated the audience with a beautiful choral performance, while Piper’s Cross brought their distinctive blend of traditional and contemporary Irish music to the stage. Roscommon Older People’s Council member, Veronica Barrett, gave a beautiful rendition of a song she wrote about emigration. The programme was completed by the talented Mná na hÉireann folk group, whose lively performance was warmly received and added to the celebratory atmosphere of the evening.

One of the highlights of the night came during the grand finale, when all the musicians joined together on stage for a stirring rendition of “Killa”, generating a tremendous response from the packed audience. The evening concluded with everyone standing together to sing the Irish National Anthem, providing a fitting and emotional end to a very special celebration of culture, music and community spirit.

Sheila Coyle, Roscommon County Council’s Age Friendly Programme Manager expressed her sincere appreciation to all of the performers, attendees, volunteers and staff of Roscommon Arts Centre who contributed to the success of the event. Special thanks were extended to the Creative Ireland Team in Roscommon County Council, whose funding support made the event possible.
